Allentown Tidbits

A man named William Allen, who was the Chief Justice of the Colonial Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and also successful businessman and the former Mayor of Philadelphia, established the settlement of Allentown which was initially known as Northamptontown. In 1762, Mr. Allen platted a rural settlement. Almost everybody called the settlement Allentown in spite of its previous name. As the result of its location next to the Lehigh River, Mr. Allen hoped Northamptontown would become a commercial hub.

However, during the majority of the year, the low water level made river trade impractical. Apparently, Mr. Allan gave the land to his son, named James sometime during the early 1770's, who constructed a country home known as Trout Hall after his father's fishing and hunting lodge. Allentown remained a small settlement of Pennsylvania Dutch who were German tradesmen and farmers, as late as the time of the American Revolution. However, from years after the Revolutionary War until the 1820's, the settlement continued its development as a hub of marketing for local farmers. The settlement was the on the large grain producing areas in the nation, according to the United States Census of 1810.

The settlement adopted the name of Allentown, officially, in 1838. However, this wasn't the only change that Allentown would experience. The industrial revolution in America, which started in Lehigh Valley, was beginning nationwide from the 1830's through the 1840's, and the arrival of the railroad and the Lehigh Canal, made Allentown a community that Mr. Allen would have never believed.

There was a dramatic increase in the local iron industry from the 1850's through the 1860's. The growing railroad network in the country used all the iron that Allentown could produce. The large influx of Irish and German workers created an iron town similar to Pittsburg next to the banks of the Lehigh River during the period after the Civil War. However, during the panic in 1873, the collapse of the railroad boom resulted in a sharp decline in the prosperity of the community. The iron industry decreased to practically nothing and never recovered as small and large iron furnaces closed one by one.

Allentown fully recovered from the economic disasters during the 1800's by the early 1900's. Although they weren't alone, the dying iron trade was taken over by the silk mills. The diverse economy in Allentown economy produced everything from cigars and beer to parlor furniture.

Allentown underwent another transition since WW II and especially since the 1960's. The community once again dealt with change as it faced with the increase of the service economy and the decline of manufacturing. Allen saw over $1 billion in planned and new development due to the passage of the Neighborhood Improvement Zone legislation by the state, Allentown is seeing more than $1 billion in new and planned development due paced by the PPL Center, which is a 10,000-seat arena located on the corner of Hamilton Street and Seventh Street. & Hamilton streets. The infrastructure of Allentown includes state-of-the-art technology, that includes uninterrupted electrical service and a fiber optic loop. These innovations are important in drawing businesses to the downtown district.

In 1916 the city of Allentown officially adopted the Municipal Coat-of-Arms. In 1956, for better clarification. The Allen City Council amended the Municipal Coat-of-Arms. The blood red heart is the specific insignia of Allentown is located in the center of the keystone and expresses everything where power of action and growth is a heartfelt feeling and centered on all of mankind. The eagle, which is colored a grayish brown, represents the country that occupies the position in support of the keystone, which is colored white, and is the emblem of Pennsylvania.
