Trenton Tidbits
Trenton, New Jersey still has some of its colonial charm after being known as the location where George Washington won his first victory over the Redcoats during the War of Independence. Trenton is the namesake of one of the leading property owners named William Trent and is the capital of New Jersey.
Although sometime later the name was shortened to Trenton, the settlement was originally known as Trent-towne. Trenton is the namesake of the man who bought a considerable amount of the surrounding property from original lane owner named Quaker Mahlon Stacy. In 1679, Mr. Stacy arrived in the region. These days, the home of Mr. Trent is a National Historic Landmark and provides interpretive tours and programs.
There were several important battles that were fought in New Jersey during the War for Independence, that included Trenton, in 1776, where, on Christmas night, General George Washington crossed the Delaware River. General Washington surprised the Redcoats in a battle that boosted the confidence of the fledgling nation and resulted in a very badly needed victory. This skirmish was a big surprise as the result of the successful intelligence mission that was conducted by an American spy named John Honeyman. This was in spite if the fact that the skirmish occurred during the early hours of daylight.
A Colonel named Johann Gottlieb Rail along with his mercenary forces weren't prepared for the battle and were convinced that the colonists weren't capable of mounting an attack and were completely demoralized. This battle resulted in some 900 captured Hessian soldiers as well as some 100 casualties.
Trenton served as the capital of the new country for a short time following the war, in 1784 during November and December. As the result of a compromise negotiated between the southern and the northern states, the capital of the new nation was established on the Potomac River rather than on the Delaware River. Representatives from all around new jersey held a meeting in Trenton to unanimously approve the recently drafted Constitution of America in December of 1787.
In 1790, while Trenton became the capital of new Jersey, the state legislature frequently held meetings there in 1789. The year 1792 brought the incorporation of Trenton as a city.
Between the late 1800's and early 1900's, Trenton was one of the major manufacturing hubs in the nation. Trenton produced ceramics, linoleum, rope, wire, rubber, and steel. During the 1920's, the city adopted the slogan Trenton Makes and the World Takes, Trenton placed this slogan on billboards that were affixed to the Lower Free Bridge, that was located just north of the Trenton-Morrisville Toll Bridge. This bridge came to be called the Trenton Makes Bridge.

Trenton displays its past proudly in such museums as the National Guard Militia Museum, the Old Barracks Museum, and the New Jersey State Museum, which serves as an entrance to some historical locations in Trenton. These historical locations celebrate the significance of Trenton during the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and other periods in the history of the country. The State Museum also contains a planetarium that displays photos that were taken by the Hubble Telescope and has historical artifacts that date back to the 1800's.
The Trenton City Museum, which is located in the old Ellerslie mansion, offers some 1800's and 1900's collections of art ware, sanitary ware, and tableware that were produced during the heyday of ceramic production in Trenton.
A building that was constructed during the French and Indian War for the Hessian and British mercenaries, houses the Old Barracks Museum. After General George Washington regained the territory due to the battle of Trenton, it was also used by the Americans.
Trenton does have the Medical Center Nursing School of Saint Francis, and the Thomas Edison State College, among others, although the city is short on universities and colleges. Established in 1972, the Thomas Edison State College is the namesake of Thomas Alva Edison who was a native of New Jersey. Mr. Edison applied his disciplines of mass production to the development of inventions. He also is reportedly to have developed the first industrial research center in the country.
During the early 1960's, Rider University, which was established in Trenton just after the Civil War, was moved approximately half-way between Princeton and Trenton in Lawrenceville.
