Claymont Tidbits

Built in 1805, the school stands as a historical reminder in the small town of Claymont. Sometimes known as Naaman's Creek School, the Claymont Stone School was built on the land given by Father John Dickinson, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. It is a two-room schoolhouse listed in the National Register of Historic Places and had originally operated till 1925. As a well-preserved school, it has the honor of being the first racially integrated public school in the country.

With its gray stonework and wide spaces, it became a library for the Women's Club of Claymont. Later on, it reopened as an elementary school during the height of the town's population boom. While operating as a school, it also served as the community's public library well into the late 1980s. Now, the Stone School serves as a venue for community events like Gingerbread House Contest, Girl Scout Tea Program, art events, and other educational sessions.

Claymont, Delaware is a small town, with only 8,000 residents, but on it stands several historic houses and establishments that date as far back as the 1700s. In fact, one of its oldest buildings is the Robinson House, which sits at the junction of Naamans Road and Route 13, Philadelphia Pike. It was built in 1723 on the site of the original settlement by Naaman's Creek, making the Robinson House one of the oldest buildings in town.

The house also welcomed several public figures like George Washington, Gen. Anthony Wayne, the Marquis de Lafayatte, and "Light Horse" Harry Lee, who stayed at the house as guests one time. The Robinson House also served as the Naamans Tea House from 1914 to 1964. Right now, this historic building serves as the main office for the Claymont Historical Society, the Darley Society, and the Naamans Heritage Association.

A few yards away from the Robinson House is another historic establishment and it was built in the 1600s. The Block House is the only building that remains from the first row of settlement houses in Claymont. The house was established in 1654 by Johan Risingh on a piece of land from the Minqua tribe. The Block House was originally designed for defense. In fact, a few years after it was built, it was taken over by the Dutch West India Company when Fort Christina was captured. Later, it was attacked by Native Americans, then captured by the British during the American Revolutionary War.

The Block House only has one room, but it has two levels, which contain a large fireplace and living quarters for the service staff working at the Robinson House. Aside from the Robinson and Block houses, Claymont is also home to the Darley House, which is located along the Philadelphia Pike and Darley Road. It was once the home of Felix Octavius Carr Darley, a 19th century painter and illustrator.

The house was originally built in the 18th century, but was later renovated and expanded in the 19th century before Darley bought it in 1863. He later called the house the "Wren's Nest". It was in this house where Darley made illustrations for works by Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and James F. Cooper. He died in his home while doing work on a Dickens portfolio.

Just across the Darley House is another historic building, the Archmere Academy, which is a private Catholic college prep school. It's a small co-ed school that enrolls around 500 students. Initially, it began life as an all-boys school in 1932. The school was housed in the estate of an industrialist. Claymont has been a residential area for 800 years; hence, it has some of the better preserved historical sites in Delaware.

Located at the mouth of Naaman's Creek, Claymont's first inhabitants were Native American tribes that named the creek after a Lenape chief. The town started as an agricultural community before developing into a suburban area for wealthy Philadelphia settlers and entrepreneurs. When the 20th century came, Claymont became a largely industrial community.

The town's historical society places a huge importance on preserving and revitalizing the historic district. In fact, its renovations of the Stone School, the Robinson House, and the Darley House earned the town a Sustainable Communities Award from the National Association of Counties.

Claymont is also paving the way for a Renaissance Village that also includes the Hickman Row, two blocks of historic row houses built in 1919 to house workers for the Worth Steel Corporation. The historic village also includes the Ivyside Farm, built as early as 1795 as a two and a half-story house with a barn, carriage house, corncrib, and a chicken house. The town's relatively small area makes it a dream for tourists and history buffs to visit historical areas quickly, considering that many of them are just a few yards away from each other.
