Delaware City Tidbits
If you thought Delaware was a boring state, you'd be dead wrong. Aside from marvelous nature trails and impressive historic sites, Delaware is home to several spooky happenings and haunts. No stone is left unturned in the state when it comes to entertainment and excitement. In fact, Delaware City has its very own Delaware Ghost Hunters society that manages the city's paranormal expo, where like-minded people can discuss events, news, and theories about the occult.
The Diamond State Ghost Hunters Inc. and staff of Delaware's state parks hold paranormal investigations for anyone brave enough to go hunting for strange creatures and phenomena during the night. The ghost tours start late in the evening during October, where Halloween ghost tours are the most popular form of entertainment among the young, brave, and foolish. It's a three-hour activity that's a lot of fun even if you don't believe in ghosts.
Although named after the state itself, Delaware City is not a bustling metropolis. With a little more than 1,000 residents, the area is a small port town that has sprawling parks, historic remnants, and celebrations that draw in visitors who like to get away from noisy streets and narrow roads.
Since it is a port town, visitors and residents can get a great waterfront view of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. In fact, one of Delaware City's oldest buildings is the Canal House, which is located in the middle of the historic district. It was first built in the 1830s as a two-story mule barn. When the canal widened, the house became a series of apartments. Now, it's a place where people can enjoy the view and the some Delaware cuisine.
It's very close to several Delaware City attractions like Fort Delaware, Delaware City Marina, the State Park, and even the University of Delaware. The Canal House has suites that visitors can rent for their stay in Delaware City. It's furnished like a real home and is a great place to stay in when the city rolls out its parades, especially during the Delaware City Day in July, where the local government and societies bring in local entertainment and fireworks.
Meanwhile, in September, you will witness the Canal Fest, another celebration that showcases different activities by the water. There will be street fair, craft shows, and entertainment from schools and different organizations. Those who want more adventure don't have a reason to refrain from renting a boat for a tour down the river or a trip to Pea Patch Island for bird watching. There are nine different species of herons, egrets, and ibis on that island. In fact, the American Birding Association has made this place its headquarters. There are cruises along the island and hike trails make this area a popular tourist destination.
Down Dover Downs Casino, you'll be able to do a lot more activities like horse racing and live entertainment. For a more exciting sport, you can go down the International Speedway to witness several Nascar races. While they will certainly get your heart racing, Delaware City is also known for other heart-pounding events like the Escape From Fort Delaware Triathlon.
It's not an annual event, but residents consider the triathlon with fond memories. In 2012, participants swam more than 1,600 yards, jumped on a bike and pedaled for around 25 miles, ran 6 miles, swam again from the river to the mainland, biked 40 kilometers, and ran 10 kilometers to finish the event.
After an activity like that, it's no wonder Delaware City also hosts river rides and a festival for the populace. There is an annual River Towns Ride and Festival, a joint festival held in a single day by Delaware City and New Castle City. The participants will cycle from the two cities on Route 9. There are prizes to be won, but cyclists can also just join for the fun. While the bike competition is going on, there will be festivals held in each city's historic districts.
During the one-day festival, there will also be live music, attractions, rides, games, tours, booths selling crafts, food, and drinks. Both cities will also offer a craft beer festival from noon till early evening. Even with just a few residents, Delaware City loves to party. In fact, during the summer, the residents celebrate and perform live music in the parks. There are also vendors who sell food and drinks, although some people bring their own to enjoy and share.
People in Delaware City are active, be it in music, festivals, nature walk, or sports. Its Fort DuPont State Park, in fact, contains the home field of the Diamond State Baseball Club, a vintage baseball team. You can watch four to six of their games in a year. The team plays on Pea Patch Island and Port Penn, where residents watch and support them for preserving old baseball and for promoting physical health and fitness.
Delaware City is a beautiful and idyllic place that offers anything a local resident could ask for. There are old buildings that belong to a bygone era that remain to serve as a reminder of the past. The city also has a natural beauty, both on land and on water. What's more, Delaware City is home to a community that's passionate, caring, and carefree.
