    Middletown Tidbits

Located at 24 miles of Wilmington is the town of Middletown. It started off as a crossroads town, but now boasts a community of more than 18,000 residents. Middletown began as a place where settlers, traders, and other merchants would stop for a drink at the local tavern. These people were usually traveling either to or from Odessa or Maryland. It's how the town got is name as the "Middletown".

The town was incorporated in 1861 and is called the "Diamond Town of the Diamond State" because its shape vaguely resembles a diamond. There are several historic landmarks and sites in Middletown. One of them is the Middletown Academy, which was built in 1826. Eventually, it was closed in 1929. Now, it serves as the office of the historical society and the chamber of commerce.

Although the academy underwent some renovations, the basic interior design hasn't changed. There are three rooms on each floor and a central hall in a two and a half story structure. The St. Georges Hundred Historical Society manages the building now and over the years has used it to host a library, a police station, offices, and a meeting hall.

There are several events and historic building happening on Main Street. One of Middletown's popular attractions and landmarks is the Four Corners memorial on Cochran Square. Originally, it was built in honor of the soldiers who died during World War I, but now it is dedicated to all the men and women who died in service of the country.

The Middletown's Main Street community has several activities and areas for art and entertainment like the Gilbert W. Perry Jr. Center for the Arts. It offers summer camps and art classes for the residents, especially the children and teenagers. Participants get to learn how to paint, draw comics and cartoons, make graphic designs, or come up with a mixed media artwork.

The Everett Theatre is where you can watch movies and plays and join performances and acting classes. The theater started in 1922 and it hosted motion pictures and vaudeville performances for the town. As a historical part of the town, the theater was purchased and saved from destruction by several members of the community, who later formed a society for the arts. The theater was also one of the settings for the 1989 film "Dead Poets Society".

The town loves its dogs, so it's no surprise that Middletown has a dedicated Dog Park for your canine friends. There is a dog park for the small dogs and another one for the larger ones. If you want to take your dog walking or if you want to play catch, head on over to the Charles Price Memorial Park at Levels Road, a 100-acre plot of land where Middletown locals hike down its trails, go release fishing at the pond, have a picnic on the grassy areas, or stay at the pavilions for a nice time. The pavilions offer grills and picnic tables, which are perfect for a group celebration or family outing.

Another recreational area is the Silver Lake Park, which houses pavilions, ball fields, tennis courts, skateboarding ramps, basketball courts, track, soccer fields, and a pool, which is now managed by the Middletown YMCA. There's also the Doc Levinson Park. It's smaller than the other two, but it also offers space and fields for basketball, skateboarding, and tennis. There are also pavilions, walking trails, and a playground for young kids.

Middletown may not officially be a city, but its growth can rival a major metropolitan district. Moreover, its population and economic growth have been rapid, earning it the title of being the fastest growing area in Delaware. Because of this, many housing developments cropped up in the area, drawing in people from Wilmington and Philadelphia. Business is also good in Middletown, after so many retail stores and food chains started popping up all over the place. Even Amazon has an office in Middletown.

The town's growth is so substantial, that it has its own dedicated police the force, the Middletown Police Department. Middletown is a bustling place that can rival nearby big cities like Newark. Due to the city's size, Middletown High School could no longer hold its students so a second public school, Appoquinimink High School, was created in 2008. There are several private schools in the area and Wilmington University has a location in Middletown, making the town busier than ever.

The town has several festivals. The most anticipated every year is the Olde-Tyme Peach Festival. It begins with a Peach parade early in the morning and will conclude late in the afternoon. Usually, during this festival, the main street will be closed off for the event. If you're lucky enough to be in Middletown for this celebration, you will witness several entertaining activities throughout the day like peach pie contests, concerts, games, and vendors selling crafts, food, and drinks.

No one is allowed to sell peaches during the festival, although businesses can sell peach-related products like crafts, food, and drinks. More than 27,000 people attend the festival, which is hosted by the Middletown Historical Society. Each August, everyone in Middletown flock to the streets to join in on the Peach fun.
