Reading Tidbits
From about 1877 through the early 1900's the community of Reading was fascinating on many different levels. Reading had been the center of some amazing manufacturing activity from the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution. This was particularly true for textile manufacturing, the production of steel and iron, and railroad distribution and transit starting in the early 1900's. The men who grew the industrial companies in Reading and the surrounding Berks County made great fortunes. Many industrialist families rose to social prominence and inhabited great new great mansions on Reading Avenue in the adjoining community of Wyomissing and next to Centre Avenue in Reading.
However, ultimately, Reading was located in the middle of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is what makes this community so intriguing. This gave way to the rise and prominence of the Socialist party. This was paradoxical since, at the time, Reading was primarily populated by native born, primarily white, conservative, protestant, Americans of German ancestry. These industrialists who lived in the region generously donated money for cultural activities, social services, and schools, as there was very little unemployment. Homeownership was very close to being significantly greater than the national average and there many tenement apartments that were loaded with the masses of polyglot immigrants, which was the case in many of the other communities.
In Reading, the early industries in Reading included trades such as the manufacture of boots, shoes, cigars, and beer. In 1806, Reading was also a thriving hub for hat making. Every year, the community produced as many as 56,000 hats and there were 40 hat factories in the community. Between 1825 and 1850, the community developed quickly. Reading was situated on the Schuylkill river nearly equidistant between Harrisburg and Philadelphia just southeast of the anthracite coal district in Pennsylvania and as such the primary contributor to the growth of the community was transportation. In the early 1800's, turnpikes and later canals next to the Schuylkill served as the predominant modes of transportation.
Canal systems and the stagecoach were eventually abandoned because the new railroads were so successful during the Industrial Revolution of the 1830's. The most famous and largest local railroad was the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. In 1833, this railroad was incorporated and was the first railroad line between Pottstown and reading in 1837. In 1839, this railroad line was extended to Philadelphia. Initially, the company built the railroad line to ship coal from the anthracite coal area in Pennsylvania to the ports and markets on the eastern seaboard. During the 1840, passenger service started. Eventually, the railroad line became one of the largest railroad networks in the country and was briefly the largest industrial corporation in the world before the onset of the Civil War. The railroad line maintained its own railroad shops, where the first coal burning engines were designed and built.
The factories in Reading increased in number and size as the result of the Civil War demand for goods. This continued even after the end of the war. Industries that expanded and prospered after the Civil War era included flour mills, machine works, hardware production, knitting and hosiery mills, steel and iron foundries, and the railroad. In addition, some other factories produced many different types of goods that included pianos, brushes, combs, furniture, and bricks.
Between the 1880's and the 1890's, free thinkers, humanitarians, and other social reformers from a diverse socio-economic stratum in Reading formed a coalition. Originally, the socialist movement in Reading didn't have a distinction in class. The reason for this was because it was united in its search for some new dogma that might provide an answer to the problems that confronted an ever increasingly impersonal, centralized, and industrialized society. Agrarian reformers, populists, and socialists effectively tapped into this angst amongst the rural populace and working class to further their programs. For the socialists in Reading the ultimate objective was to put socialist programs and ideals in practice by organizing an effective political machine for the purpose of electing socialists to local public office.
During the middle 1890's, the socialists in Reading elected to join the Socialists labor party as the result of the organizational and natural political progression. The element of the middle and upper working trade union became the dominant force in the movement by becoming aligned with the national party. From the middle or upper class of humanitarians, there was little, if any, active support. As the result of its almost exclusive alliance with organized labor, this movement grew steadily as the result of its nearly exclusive alliance with organized labor this movement steadily grew. After years of organizing the Socialist party in Reading reached 6,774 registered voters at its peak in 1935. Also in 1935, public offices such as the mayor's office was won in something of a landslide, with the socialist mayoral candidate receiving 20,575 votes. It is obvious that numerous independents, republicans, and democrats had crossed party lines.
The Reading Socialist party was an organization that was very close knit. Much of the success that the party achieved was the result of the working class of the community an organization that was, in many respects, superior to that of either the Democrat or Republican parties in that the Socialist party that successfully linked the economic, social, and political activities of the workers. It was ever present in the lives of the working class and continuously functioned between making good use of contemporaneous devices to develop a solid unity. The Reading Socialist party was successful in the transfer of power to the working class majority from one class group.
The Reading socialists offered their political views through many different types of media. They used oral propaganda delivered during meetings on street corners at first. Sometime later, the socialists purchased their own printing plant and began publishing a weekly newspaper, known as The Labor Advocate. Up until members of the socialists' party started being elected, there wasn't much coverage of their activities in the local daily newspapers in Reading. However, the daily press adopted a more conciliatory attitude since there was a serious threat to their circulation if socialist supporters voted to boycott their publications.
