    Bear Tidbits

The two-story, five-bay dwelling is easy to spot. It's the biggest white house in the middle of the land, easily towering over the other buildings spread across the property. This is called the White Hall, or sometimes the William Cann Tenant House and Andrew Elliason Tenant House. It was built first in the 19th century, with a Greek Revival and Italianate style. It was renovated in 1830 and again in 1860, marking it as a one-of-a-kind historic building with items and woodwork that exemplify style made popular through various times in history.

The White Hall is one of the main attractions of Bear, Delaware. The town resides in New Castle County and has a ballooning population of almost 20,000. Ironically, Bear once started out as just as crossroads in a rural area. It was filled with many small farms that grew corn and had cattle. The growth of the population is attributed to the housing developments that erupted in the area during the 1980s to the 90s.

If you want to know a lot more about Bear, go to the local watering hole and have a chat with the residents. It's a sprawling community filled with colorful characters. One of the stories you'll hear is the origin of the area's name. According to the locals, the area "Bear" was named after a local tavern along the Wilmington road. Its sign bore the image of a large bear, so the town that grew around was reportedly named after that tavern.

Whether or not that's true, it sure does make an exciting tale to pass around the dinner table or bar for the tourists. Speaking of taverns, the locals of Bear swear by their very own Stewart's Brewing Company. It began in 1995 and is considered the county's No. 1 brewpub. It's a great place to hang out and try the food and drinks Bear has to offer. Their seasonal brews are exciting to try.

There's obscurum, which sounds like a Harry Potter spell, but it's actually a dark Belgian-inspired ale with roasted malt flavors. There's also The Way She Gose, a traditional Leipzig ale made of pale wheat and pilsner grain bill. The pub adds elderberries, sea salt, and coriander to the give a mix a zany taste. Adventurous tourists can also go for the Baller Alert, the Maibock, the Rocky Mountain IPA, and the Honey Blonde Ale. Their permanent crafts include the Governor's Golden Ale, the Irish Red Ale, the India Pale Ale, Highlander Stout, Wacky Wheat, and Black and Tan. Because of the amazing brews, the company has won several awards throughout the years since 2001. While every day is fun at this brewpub, you should see how they do things during game day!

Delaware is the state with the highest number of students attending private school. In Bear alone, a sizable number of its residents attend the prominent private schools in the area. The Caraval Academy is the biggest, with more than 1,000 students. Other private schools are the Red Lion Christian Academy, Tall Oaks Classical School, Glasgow Christian School, and Fairwinds Christian School.

Since Bear has a large population, all its schools are provided by the Colonial School District, the Christian School District, and the Appoquinimink School District. Although Bear doesn't have a university of its own, part of its area does contain Wilmington University's sports complex. It's a diverse place, with Spanish being the most spoken non-English language. It's a testament to the beauty of Bear's local community.

Bear also has recreational parks for people to enjoy like the Lums Pond State Park and the Whale Wallow Nature Center. The former encompasses Delaware's largest freshwater pond. It's one of the New Castle's go-to parks for hiking, camping, and fishing. The adventure guides around the place also offer unique experiences that include zip lines, Tarzan swings, treetop crossings, and rope ladders.

Hikers can go to the Lums Pond State Park and explore the 7.5 mile Swamp Forest Trail or other trails that are also used by bikers and horses. For more athletic endeavors, the state park has ball fields and game courts that allow friends and students to play basketball, soccer, softball, football, baseball, tennis, or volleyball. Other sports that the state park offers are the horseshoe or disc golf. Many of the locals spend their summers playing at the park, but the winter season doesn't empty Lums Pond either.

When the snow falls, locals and visitors have the opportunity to go skiing and snowmobiling around the area. There are a lot of things to do at Lums Pond State Park. Even if you're not into land sports, you'll be surprised to know that the park has private slips for 250 boats in its Summit North Marina. Since it sits in the Lums Pond area, it has become a designated Hurricane Hole, which means that it's one of the safest places to be when the weather takes a change for the worse.

It's open all year long and offers several amenities from boaters around the country, especially those coming from Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. There's a marine service center nearby, plus a 24/7 security control center, an on-site restaurant and bar, shower and laundry facilities, cable TV, outdoor pool for those who occupy the marina's slips, a grocery store, and of course, the nearby scenic trails. Whether it's enjoying the best beer, experiencing nature, or spending time on the water, Bear has it all.
